Altlhough this site is aimed more for the high school level, it
carefully outlines the necessary steps in creating a research paper.
It is divided into six sections: Getting Started, Discovering and
Choosing a Topic, Looking for and Forming a Focus, Gathering Information,
Preparing to Write, Writing the Paper. Each step is thoroughly analyzed
and linked to other sources of helpful information. A very thorough
exploration of writing research papers, and an excellent source
for quick references of the mechanics involved.

The idea directory includes a "research launchpad" that

The writing center provides step-by-step instruction for writing
the paper, and links are provided to information on all aspects,

A simple question returns a variety of possibilities for exploring
any subject. Also gives references to other websites. All links
are monitored and approved for children. Includes a spell check
for the search box and a few fun add-ons like "Today's Word",
"Brain Box TV" and "Net-Mom Picks".

This encyclopedia is by the perople who produce Reading and Math
Blaster. The information is arranged in a very easy to navigate
format. Articles included are short, informative text. This is an
interesting choice for quick navigation.
Concise Columbia Encyclopedia
Information assembled from the Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia.
Entries are short, but extensive cross-references are available,
as well as links to websites, books, and to "millions"
of articles and pictures from the Electric Library.
Encyclopedia Britannica
This is the place to do in-depth research. Britannica offers a quick
overview, or more detailed information for every search. Also provides
links to websites, books and magazines. The site looks complicated,
but just type in your search and see what happens!

Cybrary for Middle School and Beyond
This award winning site is an extensive listing of links to reference
resources for just about anything. Encyclopedias, almanacs, etc.,
etc., etc. Links indexed by subject: Art & Music, American History,
Literature and Writing, Geography, Mathematics, Science, World History,
and also by source. Very thorough and easy to navigate. Updated
twice weekly.
History in the
National Park Service
An email service to ask questions to historians in the National
Park Service. Listed by specialty, the email addresses of many,
many, historians are included. There is a disclaimer that these
historians do not do research, or write reports or answer test questions,
and that the best place to begin a search is with the reference
librarian at your local library. This would be a fun site to use
for a different viewpoint on a subject being researched.
Amazing Picture Machine
An index of graphical images (pictures) on the internet by the North
Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium. Good quick
resource for pictures to support research.
Biographical Dictionary
An award winning, top rated net site. This dictionary lists over
27,000 biographies. It is easy to search by Name, Keyword or Date.
Two features that are especially helpful to students are the "Ideas"
and the "Spelling Wizard." "Ideas" lists a number
of ways to approach the information search on biographies, and gives
examples of keyword searches. The "Spelling Wizard" asks
for the approximate spelling of a last name, and then finds matches
that are similar. Entries are brief, but a great starting place
for younger students.

This site is a fantastic presentation of how to research and write
a biography. The well written steps are easy to follow: Questioning,
Learning, Synthesis, Story-Telling and Six Traits of Effective Writing.
This "machine" is "designed to help you convert facts
into insights, dull and boring information into fascination and
magic. It will help you do a good job, but you must provide some
of the "steam" to make it work well." Great site.

This is a web presentation that was originally a wall chart. It
is a visual representation of history that is divided into three
parts. The top depicts lifelines of 464 important persons, the center
desplays the chronologies of major civilizations, and the bottom
contains maps. Links are provided to more information on each of
the listings. Concise and clear articles pop up next to the chart.
This is a wonderful resource for any research that involves synthesis
of cultural events---history or humanities, as well as great biographical
information. Links are included to other WWW sites and articles.
This is a truly amazing site, and although it appears complex, is
actually very easy to use.
